Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
- 1/4 cup water or apple cider
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Wash the apples. Core each apple, leaving the bottom intact to create a well. You can use an apple corer or a small knife.
- In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- If using, stir in the chopped nuts and raisins into the sugar mixture.
- Place the cored apples in a baking dish.
- Spoon the brown sugar mixture evenly into the core of each apple.
- Top the filling in each apple with a few small pieces of butter.
- Pour the water or apple cider into the bottom of the baking dish.
- Bake for 30-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Baking time will vary depending on the apple variety and size.
- Baste the apples with the pan juices halfway through baking if desired.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- For a healthier option, reduce the amount of brown sugar or use a natural sweetener like maple syrup.
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
- Ensure the bottom of the apple is intact to hold the filling.
- Adjust baking time based on your preferred tenderness of the apples.
