This classic tuna casserole recipe provides a comforting and easy meal for the family. It features tender egg noodles, flaky tuna, and a creamy sauce, all baked until golden brown.

- 8 ounces egg noodles
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped celery
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 (5 ounce) cans tuna, drained
- 1 cup frozen peas, thawed
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cook egg noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and celery; cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Remove from heat. Stir in salt and pepper.
- Add drained tuna, peas, cooked noodles, and 1/2 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese to the sauce. Mix gently to combine.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs (if using).
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
- Let stand for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- You can add a can of cream of mushroom soup for an even creamier sauce.
- Try adding a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder for extra flavor.
- For a crunchy topping, crush some potato chips or crackers and sprinkle them over the top.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
