Scale
  • For the dough:
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • For the spicy tomato sauce:
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp red chili flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • For the toppings:
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni or spicy sausage (optional)
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced (remove seeds for less heat)
  • 1/2 bell pepper, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)
  • Chili oil (optional for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center, add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix and knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
  5. Prepare the spicy tomato sauce: In a small saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  6. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  7. Add tomato sauce, red chili flakes, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  8. Cook for 10-15 minutes to thicken slightly, stirring occasionally.
  9. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat as well.
  10. Assemble the pizza: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two portions if making two pizzas.
  11. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness.
  12. Transfer the dough to a pizza peel or baking sheet.
  13. Spread a thin layer of the spicy tomato sauce over the dough.
  14. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese evenly.
  15. Add pepperoni or sausage (if using), red onion, jalapeño, and bell peppers.
  16. Add a few basil leaves if desired.
  17. Bake the pizza: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and cheese is melted and bubbly.
  18. Remove from the oven and let cool for a couple of minutes.
  19. Serve: Drizzle with chili oil if extra heat is desired.
  20. Slice and enjoy your spicy homemade pizza!
