Description

This recipe guides you through making homemade cinnamon rolls. These ooey gooey treats are perfect for breakfast. You can enjoy warm, soft rolls with a sweet cinnamon filling and a delicious cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and granulated sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes, until foamy.
  2. Stir in the egg, melted butter, and salt. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. While the dough rises, prepare the filling. In a medium bowl, combine softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it into a 12×18 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border on one long edge.
  8. Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log.
  9. Cut the log into 12 equal slices using a sharp knife or dental floss.
  10. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  13. While the rolls bake, prepare the cream cheese frosting. In a medium bowl, beat softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  14. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk/heavy cream until smooth and creamy.
  15. Once the cinnamon rolls are out of the oven, let them cool for a few minutes before spreading the frosting generously over them.
  16. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Ensure your milk is the correct temperature for activating the yeast.
  • Do not over-knead the dough; it should be soft and pliable.
  • For extra soft rolls, place a pan of hot water on the bottom rack of your oven during the second rise.
  • Adjust the amount of milk/cream in the frosting to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Leftover cinnamon rolls can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerated for up to 5 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or oven.
