Description
A simple and delicious recipe for homemade applesauce made from scratch with fresh apples and cinnamon. This recipe is perfect for a healthy snack, baby food, or as a side dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 pounds apples (about 6–8 medium), peeled, cored, and quartered
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
Instructions
- Combine apples, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using) in a large pot.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until apples are very tender.
- Remove from heat. Stir in lemon juice (if using).
- Mash the apples with a potato masher or fork until desired consistency is reached. For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or regular blender.
- Let cool before serving or storing.
Notes
- You can use any type of apple, but a mix of sweet and tart apples (like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith) yields the best flavor.
- Adjust cinnamon and nutmeg to your preference.
- This applesauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- For longer storage, freeze in individual portions.
