Description

A comforting and cheesy broccoli casserole, perfect for family dinners or holiday gatherings. This easy recipe features tender broccoli florets baked in a creamy cheese sauce, topped with a crunchy breadcrumb or cracker topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups broccoli florets (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup crushed buttery crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. If using fresh broccoli, blanch it in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then drain. If using frozen, thaw it.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onion (if using), and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
  5. Add the broccoli florets to the soup mixture and stir gently to coat.
  6. Pour the broccoli mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  7. In a small bowl, combine the crushed crackers or breadcrumbs with the melted butter.
  8. Sprinkle the buttered cracker or breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the casserole.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
  10. Let it stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a tablespoon of Dijon mustard to the soup mixture.
  • Feel free to substitute cream of chicken or cream of celery soup for cream of mushroom.
  • Other cheese options include Gruyere, Monterey Jack, or a blend of cheeses.
  • For a healthier version, use low-fat soup, sour cream, and cheese. You can also omit the cracker topping or use whole wheat breadcrumbs.
  • Add cooked chicken or ham for a complete meal.
