Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples (about 6–8 medium apples, a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, and Granny Smith)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey for added sweetness
Instructions
- Combine chopped apples, water, and lemon juice in a large pot or Dutch oven.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until apples are very tender. Stir occasionally.
- Remove from heat. Mash the apples with a potato masher or immersion blender to your desired consistency. For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or food processor.
- Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. If using, add sweetener to taste.
- Let cool slightly before serving warm, or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to a week.
Notes
- For a thicker applesauce, use less water.
- Experiment with different apple varieties for unique flavor profiles.
- Add other spices like ginger or allspice for variation.
- This applesauce is great for baby food, baking, or as a topping for yogurt and oatmeal.
